Both the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Archos G9 tablets will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the next two weeks, so here is how the tablets compare. Archos will start updating their G9 10-inch tablet soon, but no exact date has been given. However, online retailer Dynamism is promising a ship date of March for the 8GB variant with ICS. An over-the-air update will roll out even if you get one from another retailer, but at least that gives a bit of a time reference.

As for Asus, it announced on its Facebook page the original Transformer tablet would get the new system in February. The Transformer Prime already runs the advanced system, but there have been numerous reports of GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problems on the high-end devices. The lower priced, older, yet similar Transformer has had no such problems. Besides sharing the name of its successor, the Transformer also can connect to a companion keyboard dock ($150) that expands the battery supply, and adds USB and SD card slots. It's like a touchscreen notebook computer, and the idea is catching on as Lenovo is debuting a similar device this year. The 16 gigabyte Transformer sells for $400 at Best Buy.

It also has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1280x800p resolution, Gorilla Glass covered display, full gigabyte of memory, dual cameras, microSD card slot and mini-HDMI port. It's tough to beat at $400, but the Archos G9 goes for $329. It features many of the same features as the Transformer, but there is no rear camera or Gorilla Glass besides the smaller amount of storage. It even has a kickstand. While it's not the sturdiest or thinnest tablet, it's hard to deny that low price. Once we see ICS running on both devices side by side, we can make a true recommendation.
